Rethinking Harmony in Asia 2024 - Hybrid Leadership conference







Friday, September 27th 2024 from 8:30 a.m to 5 pm (PPH Time)


The hybrid forum, held in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh, was organized by the Asian Network and supported by ERIA : the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia & ADB SEADS: South East Asia Development Solutions.

 

The leadership conference shed light on Asia's challenges, including economic dynamism, geopolitical tensions, and environmental sustainability, advocating for multilateralism, digitalization, and peacebuilding initiatives in the region.

 

450+participants online from 22+ countries ,120 participants at the conference and 36 well recognized speakers from Japan, Indonesia, Nepal, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Australia among others nations.

Session 1 : Prioritizing Food Security Challenges and Climate Sustainability

The panelists discussed the challenges posed by population growth, economic growth, urbanization, and climate change on food security, and highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to address these issues, including the use of technology and digital solutions. The meeting also emphasized the importance of education, skill transformation, and community involvement in implementing strategies to adapt to climate change and promote sustainable practices in agriculture.

Session 2 : Rethinking globalization in a polarized world

The panel discussion revolved around the challenges of the 21st century, including nuclear issues, wealth disparities, and traditional discrimination, with a focus on the concept of democracy in Asian nations. The panelists also discussed the differing perspectives of various regions on global economic integration, the economic interests and strategies of global powers, and the strategies that Asean Member States can implement to enhance regional security cooperation. Lastly, the panelists emphasized the need for international law, the role of the UN in conflict resolution, and the importance of regional organizations in maintaining national and regional resilience in the face of the US-China rivalry.

Session 3 : Ensuring a safer and ethical digital world

The panel discussion emphasized the importance of responsible use of technology, particularly in the development of global ethical standards for artificial intelligence, neurosciences, and bioethics. The discussion also highlighted the need for English language education in rural Cambodia to maximize the potential of generative AI, and the potential of AI to improve access to government services and healthcare for underserved populations. The participants also discussed the importance of citizen involvement in decision-making processes, the complexities of global governance and technology, and the necessity of teaching digital safety and responsibility from an early age.

Session 4 : Fostering more inclusive and just societies

The session discussed the need to bridge the digital divide in Cambodia and the importance of collaboration between government, private sector, and development partners to achieve a just society. The Ministry of Women Affairs in Cambodia and the Cambodia Academy of Digital Technology were highlighted as key players in promoting gender equality and digital inclusion.

Session 5 : Harmony & Peace how to maintain it ? Cambodia as an example

The panel discussion discussed the concept of harmony and peace in Cambodia, with a focus on the country's history, current state, and its relationship with neighboring countries. The panelists emphasized the importance of understanding cultural differences, the role of diplomacy and compromise in fostering harmony, and the need for acceptance and tolerance among different groups. They also highlighted the challenges faced by Cambodia, such as the ongoing influence of China and the need for a more effective conflict resolution mechanism within ASEAN, and the importance of addressing the needs of the people through development and social justice for a complete and inclusive peace.

Session 6: Keynote presentation : Reimagining the Role of Peace

Steve Killelea, founder of the Institute of Economics and Peace, discussed the organization's research on the intersection of business, peace, and economics, and the increasing number of conflicts worldwide. The meeting also covered the concept of positive peace, the importance of peace in the 21st century, and the challenges of achieving peace in various conflict zones.
